Finished chest piece with shoulder straps attached. This is made out of sintra plastic, boat trim, garage sale signs for the shoulders with more boat trim. Held together with leather straps and chicago screws that I hand sanded and painted (weathering). One of my favorite pieces and one that I'm most proud of. The artist who drew the original concept and Weta made some beautiful armor for the film. While studying the prologue and 'art of' books, I had an entirely new appreciation for their creations. Great stuff guys and thanks!

kaiserfly, this is a wonderful site with many useful links and most of them still work. There's also a few examples of how others have made theirs. See if this helps, and if you still have questions, by all means, ask away and i'll do my best to help you.

do you have any templates for the assembly of the armour?

For the most part, I do not. Fear not though, It's not terribly complicated. I'll look around and see if I can find my old patterns, or I'll draw them out. Someone may have since then put them up online-that might be worth a look, but pretty much just everything criss crosses and is either 6 or 7 lames on all sections respectively.
The helmet is a cheap plastic $0.99 base ball cap that I cut the bill off of. Used some poster board to create the sides and neck, and the top fin shape is balsa wood. I paper mache'd everything in a couple layers then applied a pre-bagged pulp style paper mache. This added the thickness and overall shape. Once hardened, I used a little filler and sanded. All of the elven detail was created with puff paint and then everything got the gold and green dusting. This didn't photograph too well as it looks super green, but it's a bit more golden in person.
If you're in a pinch or on a tight budget..this method works, but this was an early-on costume for me and I didn't have the experience back then, but nowadays i'd probably do this a wee bit differently :D
Good luck to you and please make sure you take bunches of pics. Would love to see your progress and your work. :)

Hey :) Thanks for getting back to me :) This is year two of cosplaying so I'd like to try out something a bit different. and I love lots elves ^^. I'm all for making things cheap so foam, paper mache and wood are usually the tools of my trade. the dollar store is such a wonderful place :) I'm almost done my latest creation which is steampunk..really without the steam part but i'll be posting pics of that soon. Let me know if you find those patterns. I'll have a look online myself. :)

This is beautifully done!! It greatly resembles a leaf, which is very Tolkien Elvish. Wonderful job :)
